A collection of stuff for the Youth Ministry Contact(s) in your parish!

Week of May 23, 2010

A different kind of Social Justice: The Catholic Youth Xperience was created with the inspiration of Renewing the Vision: a comprehensive approach to youth ministry. In a word: variety! One of the eight components of RTV is Peace & Social Justice. Each year all CYX participants are urged to participate in a collection for a charity, and incoming seniors receive a hands-on lesson in applied Catholic social teaching. This year, because of the reduced schedule, we are unable to take a service trip, but I am pleased to announce that ALL CYX participants will be engaged in two key principles of Catholic social teaching: the dignity of the human person and the call to community and participation. We are xcited to announce that we are partnering with Opportunity Enterprises, an organization that serves more than 1,000 persons with developmental disabilities throughout Porter County and Northwest Indiana. They serve people with Autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, traumatic brain injuries, severe physical and mental disabilities, and more. All CYX participants will be encouraged to raise monetary donations for Opportunity Enterprises' new OE Lakeside Fundraising Campaign. Their goal is to raise enough money to expand their Lake Eliza facility to serve more clients. Thanks to the Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation, they will match every dollar we raise. Perhaps the most xciting part of the CYX partnership: an estimated 60-80 residents from OE group homes will join us for a community outreach picnic for lunch on Sunday! It will include music, fun DYC skits created for our guests, games, and promises to be a great chance to show teens how great it can be when he heed Paul's words that we are ALL the Body of Christ: But God has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it, so that there may be no division in the body, but that the parts may have the same concern for one another. If (one) part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy. (1 Cor 12: 24-26) Visit tu.nu/oppent  for more info, and for some downloadable half-sheet slips you and your teens can give to potential donors.

Social Networking followup: Special thanks to everyone who attended the Internet & Social Networking seminar last week. If you had to miss it and are interested in learning more, do not hesitate to contact me or Joe Kern (YMC, OLC, Merrillville). We are blessed to have Higher Ground Creative partnering with us. Not only are they experts in new media methods, but they are actively involved in the mission of Catholic youth ministry!

New chance for YM’s to connect: COFFEE TALK! Anyone in ministry alongside youth is invited to join us on the first Monday of each month (June 7 is the first one), 4-5:30pm, at the Starbucks at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza Merrillville, for YM Coffee Talk, a gathering for anyone in ministry alongside middle and HS youth. Not a meeting as much as a chance to pray together, support one another, share ideas, and ask "How are you?" And Kev picks up the tab for the first round of beverages! It’s not only a great chance to feel supported in your ministry, but to also give you another tool to develop your ministry, and you as a minister. No RSVP necessary. Just come!

Diocese of Gary Catholic College Ministry: There is now an effort to reach out to your college-age "youth ministry alums" and offer them something rooted in Christ, created just for them. A few ex-Diocesan Youth Council reps are spearheading a new Catholic College Ministry, which will meet a handful of times this summer. If you have some young men or women, 18-23, that are hangin' out in NW Indiana this summer looking for stuff to do, pass this along to them!

Looking to meet with other Catholic college students around your age? Come to our first Catholic College Ministry meeting for fun, food, and faith sharing! Be prepared with ideas about what you would like to see this group do. The meeting will take place June 3rd from 6:30pm-8:30pm at Our Lady of Consolation in Merrillville. This is one meeting you do not want to miss!! For more information, contact Jenn Curtin (jennifer.curtinAThotmail.com, Facebook). Find our Facebook page at facebook.com/CatholicCollegeMinistry

10 Things That Will Kill The Mood of a Youth Meeting: Randy Raus of LifeTeen has recently posted an excellent blog on paying attention to some things we might take for granted when it comes to our regular gatherings with youth. Things like: a lack of hospitality, sound issues, size of the room, poor planning, a lack of the sacred, and one he calls, “the fun police.” Read it here: http://bit.ly/aEMHSy

Teenagers Text More Than They Call: a Pew Internet research report shows that teens now text friends more often than they call them. NY Times article: “Even with unlimited plans, ‘adults aren’t texting in the same way adolescents are,’ Amanda Lenhart, senior research specialist at Pew, said. ‘Teens don’t expect people to call — texting has become the default way to connect.’” Full report: http://nyti.ms/b6H2kh
